    Acer Laptop advice

I am considering getting an Acer laptop for general browsing, email, word processing etc and was wondering if there is any issues with running Linux.

The model is Acer Aspire 5051 and the spec is:

    CPU AMD Turion 64
    RAM 512MB DDR2
    HDD 60GB
    ATI X1100 Graphics card
    LCD 14.1" WXGA TFT
    5 in 1 Card Reader
    Modem 56K
    Wireless 802.11 b/g
    DVD Super Multi
    Windows XP MCE

    Thanks for any advice

    Dave

If you search the forum, you will see that the only issue it has seems to be with sound on older versions. It may still affect you but it has a simple fix anyway.

The best option would be to try it out first before buying. As it is an older machine you may want to use a lighter OS like Lubuntu which will run a little faster.

    Hi

Make sure that the USB ports are working -some of the 5000 series Aspires have a motherboard fault which causes them to stop working permanently. If there is a little "dimple" where overheating has occurred on the top casing just below the windows key, don't touch it. Otherwise, my aspire 5101 has been great with full Ubuntu (32 bit) including 10.04 (although dont expect the built in dial up modem to work unless you have saintly patience with command line setups!)
