Save all my home folder to external hard drive and work from there.

What I would like to do is save all my home folder to an external hard drive and work from there, i.e. if I want any doc/pic/music it is all stored on the external drive I have tried just moving al the file over and get a "can't do it message".
Any ideas solutions?
