Laptop 2nd display resets on lid close/open

I have a shiny new LCD television, and I have set it up to connect to my Thinkpad laptop. I set it as a second display, so that I can use the full 1920x1080 of the TV. In the "Monitors" settings menu I have the TV set to be above the laptop screen. This all works just fine - exactly as I want. Even if I log off and/or reboot it still comes back the way I want it.

However, when I close the lid the output stops most of the time. When I open the lid the computer seems to cycle through the output options - the same as pressing the Fn + F7 button combo.

What does the lid shutting trigger this change? How can I force the computer to completely ignore the "lid shut" signal?

What graphics card do you have and what driver do you use? It should be possible to do some tricks with xrandr every time the display is opened to pot the TV back where it belongs.
What? I'm not allowed to say fsck? Then how is i supposed to help people fix their filesystems?

It's an Intel GM965, and I'm just using whatever driver come with Ubuntu - there's no restricted driver.
