Did you guys install the "additional drivers" for the nvidia? I did and when I rebooted, my screen went to console. No GUI whatsoever.

I'm having the same issue. I've tried everything with my limited Ubuntu knowledge and information available on the Internet and no luck.

When I get booted to console and I do a "startx" I get:

    Code:
    (EE) No devices detected.

    Fatal server error:
    no screens found
If I delete /etc/X11/xorg.conf and do "startx" it recreates it and I get in but then the NVIDIA Settings doesn't detect the driver.

I just got a new Dell L401X with a GeForce GT 420M video card.

Uninstalling the nvidia drivers did the trick for me:

    sudo apt-get remove nvidia-current

if you do that though you aren't able to get any of the nvidia specific features such as connecting an external monitor (my biggest pain point), etc.

Is HDMI output Nvidia-specific? I just came here to find out why it doesn't work for me.

    To me it appears so.

I'm no Ubuntu/Nix expert my any means though so hopefully somebody else can lend an expert opinion.

It's unfortunate but I'm in the process of switching back to Win7 because the unforeseeable driver compatibility issues I see as being too much of a bottleneck for my productivity. Cygwin here I come... tears.

Are you guys having issues with the brightness up and down buttons? Mine seem to give acpi errors. They are recognized, but don't work.

    Re: Dell XPS 15 (L501x)

I've got my L501x, and I've booted Maverick on it. Most things work, but the main exception is the wireless. ifconfig shows the wlan0 interface, and the iwabg driver (I think it is) is loaded, but the wireless is disabled. If I push the F2 key, the light comes on showing the interface to be on, but it still doesn't work, and syslog shows a message that it was turned on, then turned off. (I'll have to reboot to get the exact message.)

Has anyone else encountered this? Know the solution?

    Thanks,
    Andrew.
