    Dell XPS 15 (L501x)

This is my first post. I've been contemplating trying Linux for years now, but have not had the courage to step over. I've ordered my new Dell (should arrive 11/30) and am going to install Ubuntu on it. Not sure if anybody has this laptop and had installed any linux distros on it (hopefully no hardware compatibility issues).

I've heard there are lot of nice and friendly people in the linux community....wish me luck!

Once you turn to linux, there's no turning back.
I've been using Ubuntu for the last 7 years and can honesty say, I cannot go back to Windows.
No viruses anymore, No more system hangs, No more programs crashing, No more problems.

    Good choice dude.

I think that you have the wrong laptop there psavva.
krunalpatel is looking at the new xps 15.

krunalpatel: You might be jumping in at the deep end if you want to get the Nvidia chip working on this laptop as it has Nvidia's Optimus system. Take a look here and here for more information.

You are not alone in this, earlier today somebody posted about contributing to hybrid-graphics-linux with an xps 15, and mine should be arriving soon.
Hopefully it shouldn't be too long before we can get Optimus working with Linux.

Once you get going with Linux, using it is a real pleasure. Good Luck!

Thank you Jophish for the information! I'll be sure to check it out. I went on Nvidias website and found this:

    http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux-d...21-driver.html

I have the 420M Nvidia graphics card on the system. Is that the correct driver?

I don't think that the Nvidia drivers currently support Optimus.

Ah you are correct. I see there are hybrid drivers in the works - i'll sign up to be a part of the process ie. provide debugging info. Now Dell needs to quicken the pace and ship my system asap. Thanks

    Re: Dell XPS 15 (L501x)

the guy who post in hybrid graphics mail list answer to me if he have had any problem installing linux, this is the response )

    Code:
Yeah, I don't have backlit keyboard in Denmark either. I'm running a Ubuntu 10.10 64bit installation. The problems I've encountered are as follows:

     - Not able to use a USB live installation. I burned a CD and it worked perfectly. Haven't investigated this issue
     - SD/MMC/?? card reader only works if card is present at boot time. I'm investigating some bugreports. Seems to be affecting a lot of different laptops, so there's a chance that it will get attention.
    - ACPI seems a bit buggy. I can't adjust screen brightness (at least not with hotkeys), I can't get a valid temperature reading, and it supplies wrong data for the battery (Claims it is not rechargeable, and only 5Wh).
    - Only able to run with integrated i915 graphics, but acceleration works out of the box (If you don't install nvidia drivers).

Ethernet works in both 100Mbit and 1Gbit. Wireless works in g, haven't had a chance to test with n, but I will in the next couple of weeks. (The driver used is iwagn, so I assume it will work) This is with the Intel 6200 wireless.

    Re: Dell XPS 15 (L501x)

    Hi All!!!

I basically have the exact same config as JEEPQC which is below.

I have had the system for the past 5 days and the only issue I have is that bothe headphone out jacks don't work simultaneously...yet.

As for the Nvidia Optimus, with the below processor there are no onboard Intel graphics so Optimus doesn't work anyway and the Nvidia drivers work perfectly.

Optimus is only going to work on lower grade i3 / i5 processors and a few base core i7's as it needs the onboard 2D graphics to switch to.

Just as a final thought..... Meerkat works perfectly on this machine!

    Re: Dell XPS 15 (L501x)

I opted for the i5 560 intel cpu... is there a way to turn off the optimus? I want to use the Nvidia GPU at all times. Did you guys get the 1080p screen?
