    Civilization 1 available for Linux?

    Hi guys

Just wondering if there's a version of the first Civilization game available for Linux?

I know there's FreeCiv which is based on C2 but I prefer the first one with its top-down graphics.

Tried searching but not had any luck.

Even if you can get a copy of Civ1 (original Microprose version) it doesn't look like you can run it using wine .... and getting the original version doesn't look that easy...

CivFanatics has some info on Civ1 and it looks like its pretty hard to get a copy of it ...

not sure if there is a DOS emulator you could run it on...

It was made for DOS. you can run it through DOSBox (also available in repositories). if you don't like the dos command line then there is also a good front end for it : http://members.quicknet.nl/blankendaalr/dbgl/
There are also others out there.

Anyway game is totally abandoned and available free online. maybe it's even freeware though i am not sure.

Edit: Place to get the game is Abandonia. they cooperate with publishers and ESA on which titles are ok to publish and they always check thoroughly if there is any objection.

Awesome I now have it working as per your instructions mastablasta.

I'm a big fan of the original, never could get into the sequels, not sure why.

    Thanks for the replies guys.

Another option (that i have done) is to install "Steem" through synaptic. Steem is an emulator for the Atari ST\STE and it should be easy enough to find the civilization image file on the net somewhere. They are in the format of .ST file

I love Civ 1 and still prefer it to the newer civ releases for the very reason you mentioned!

Re: Civilization 1 available for Linux?

to me in civ1 the only major issue is diplomacy and spying. the latter (stealing tech) is too easy and the former is preety much basic. not to meniton the fact that they can always contact you (wiht units) but for you to do the same is not possible.

another annoying thing is micromanaging with no governors. late in the game it can take a lot of time.

otherwise i played it through and through and is really good. i like the animations when you capture the town or when they celebrate (though again this can get annoying later on)
