Linux Mint ?
Why not just move the main menu to the bottom left ?
Multi Boot Ubuntu 10.04 64bit, ******* 7 & XP SP3 on
Intel E5200 Dual Core 2.5Ghz| 4 Gb DDR2 Ram
10.04 UNR on eeePC 1000HA
Linux is NOT Windows
well, see the attached screenshot. this is what i have so far, and i think it looks halfway-decent. it is just that when you go to open the start menu, it is the regular ubuntu main menu. i just want to know if there is anything i can download to replicate the 'extremely familiar' xp window my dad has come to know and love(:

Looks like Windows. I don't really understand the difficulty, the main menu says "Applications" with the categories underneath. Dead simple. Much more intuitive than "Start" IMHO. "Software Center" is at the bottom with easy to read categories once again. Bloody mindless. No need to go hunting around the Web for Java, Flash, video drivers, sound drivers, lan drivers, ad nauseum. I have a mentally disabled friend who has always used Windows and over the phone in two minutes was able to direct her to everything pertinent. The old guy may surprise you, some of us old farts are actually still capable of learning!

Haha, I can just imagine. To me looking at a button that says "Start" and serves as some sort of link to *everything* is a lot more confusing. If he likes that kind of nested menu thing you could try him on Mint. It's almost as cluttered as XP and comes with all the codecs and java, etc. installed. The latest version Julia is rather decent at least in the looks department and hey, he'll get to have his muddled nested menu setup. There's even a "Control Panel" for him to foul things up with!
