    Question Windows XP DVD Ripper?

I'm trying to backup my DVD collection, but my Asus netbook--obviously--doesn't have a DVD drive; however, my XP notebook does. So, simple question: what should I be using to backup these DVD's? I've tried Handbrake and it did not work. The file it saved--.m4v--wouldn't play in any media player, including VLC. I've also tried simply saving from VLC and that seg faulted VLC.

So, I'm looking for the next best solution. I'd prefer FOSS, but am willing to try free/share-ware; pay software, not an option.
