This is what the terminal said when running the app/purge:

Same thing happening for me and same end point;

Solved mine by disabling the Nvidia driver if it is any help...

The only help I can offer you is this:

Backup the machine and then do a clean install of 10.10, if that's what you want on it. Upgrades can be a pain in the butt, and sometimes it's easier to start with a clean slate.

WHat would and how would I back so that I could install 10.10 and not have to build from scratch.... I.e keep configs, apps, etc..?

You can mark whatever packages you have installed in synaptic and then inport it in a new install, but as for keeping the settings and whatnot, I don't know if there is a way out of doing a normal upgrade.

enable the PPAs and update your lists then use ppa-purge
