GRUB loading stage 1.5 error 15

Hi,

I have had ubuntu on my PC for 2 years without any problem. I am dual-booting between Ubuntu and Vista from a 2yr-old TOSHIBA laptop. The version of Ubuntu I was using is 9.10 (ok, should have updated a while back, mea culpa...)

Yesterday I couldn't load Ubuntu and I got a message

I managed to sort out the problem thanks to this post

and used Ubuntu without any problem.

Now today I tried to switch the computer on again and I am getting the error message

GRUB loading, please wait...
Error 15

Following the advice on the post above, I updated GRUB to GRUB2 last night. Maybe I shouldn't have...

The screen with the GRUB error message comes before the screen that would let me choose between Vista and Ubuntu and won't let me use a command prompt or anything. The only thing I seem to be able to access is if I press F2 at start up which takes me to the Setup utility screen or F12 which takes me to the Boot Manager.

Any help would be appreciated as, in effect, my computer is useless as it is now...

Please boot from your Ubuntu Live cd/usb and after making sure you have an internet connection please go to the site below and download the boot script to your DESKTOP and run the script in a terminal using the command given on the first page of that site. This will produce a results.txt file on your desktop. Please copy the contents of that file and paste it between CODE tags in your next post. To get CODE tags click on New Reply and then on the # symbol in the toolbar.

After hearing the Ubuntu start-up music, which I thought would be a good sign, this led me to a screen with a lot of horizontal orangy/grey stripes from which I couldn't move on (see picture of screen on link http://www.flickr.com/photos/missfroguk/5141463718/).

I then tried again but this time chose

Check the integrity of the CD

which it did and it didn't find any errors.

Any suggestions? Does this problem ring any bell or is it just that I am not booting from the CD as I should?

Also, should I get the new Ubuntu version on a USB stick and try and boot from that, even though my installed version in an earlier one?

Have you ever booted from the live cd before? I suspect trying from a usb may have the same outcome unfortunately, as it would appear to be a graphics problem.
I found this from a previous thread, you could try these options

Plug in the live CD - when booting, press any key and you should be presented with 6 options.
Press either F6 or tab (I think) - add
nomodeset nolapic
BEFORE quiet splash
press the option to boot.
Hopefully you will get to the desktop.
If you dont. Try booting with
nomodeset noapic
or
nomodeset noacpi
or
nomodeset acpi=off

Ok, I have managed to boot Ubuntu from a USB stick. I think the problem I had with all the horizontal lines came from the CD.

Error 15 is often a conflict between old grub & grub2. Although grub legacy was supposed to let you boot and then boot into grub2. (As your menu.lst shows)

You also have wubi in your windows partiiton. Were/are you using wubi?

You have an install of Ubuntu in sda5, but no swap partition.

If your main install is sda5, you should uninstall grub legacy & grub2 and cleanly reinstall grub2. If your real install is the wubi install then you need a windows boot loader in the MBR.

Solved! It was pretty simple once I knew what to do. I went on the first link oldfred suggested, booted ubuntu from a usb and typed these commands in the terminal.

sudo mount /dev/sdXY /mnt
sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sdX

When I rebooted from the drive, it worked! Thank you to Quackers and oldfred for your help.

Two last questions:
1 - I am not using wubi and I don't know why I have got that in my files. Is it safe to just delete the files or should I leave them and forget about them?
2 - As I said in my first post, I am currently using Ubuntu 9.10. The problems started after I installed the latest updates. I saw there were 24 updates waiting for me this time and I am a little anxious to download them. Would you advise I did or should I simply upgrade to 10.10? Do you anticipate any problems if I upgrade or update considering this "bleep" in my otherwise pain-free relationship with Ubuntu?

1 - Strange, but I don't think they'll do any harm where they are.
2 - Back up your home folder then run the updates. If you are thinking of upgrading an way, what's the harm? With regard to upgrading lots of people on here recommend a new install rather than upgrading as sometimes problems can ensue. It may be worth downloading 10.04 (as it's a LTS) or 10.10 and burning it to disc, then using "try Ubuntu" to make sure everything works before you change.

Wubi is intended to be uninstalled from windows. But if that does not work I think you can just delete it but you may have bits and pieces left.

The Windows-based Ubuntu Installer (Wubi) allows you to install and uninstall Ubuntu from within Microsoft Windows. It lets a Microsoft Windows user try Ubuntu without risking any data loss due to disk formatting or partitioning.

If you had some video issues with liveCD, you may also with new install. I had to use the nomodeset for both liveCD and first boot, but once my Nvidia drivers were installed I have had no issues.
