ubuntu 10.04/10.10 crashes during full screen video playback

Had it since 10.04, recently installed 10.10 and the same problem appears.
I'm running asus laptop with nvidia 8600m gs, proprietary video driver, vlc media player. Everything is fine as long as it's not in full-screen mode, however, when I switch to full-screen the whole system crashes after a few seconds and doesn't respond to anything so I just have to power it off.

Also there's something wrong with audacious. Sometimes it just stops playing and becomes unresponsive. I have to force quit and restart it but after a short period of time it crashes again. If I restart the whole system it's all good again until the next surprise crash. Though audacious became unstable only in 10.10, didn't have any problems in 10.04.

Thought it was codecs, installed restricted extras but nothing changed.

Any ideas?

No you are not alone this happens to me quite a lot (Acer Aspire
55 42)and toshiba laptop also somtimes while just surfing the net, hard reset is the only way round it.

Well, I've tried the above solution and looks like it works, though I didn't have time to watch any longer videos. However, 2 short clips went almost fine, except one small freeze.

Aahhh damn... Just had a chance to test this whole thing and it turns out that the mentioned method doesn't work. System is still crashing in fullscreen.

in the instructions the user says to re-enable hard acceleration but this did not work for it. i kept is disabled and full screen works fine but may be slower.
