what is the harddrive icon that changes every time I go to the desktop

I'm using ubuntu 10.10 and i'm very new in my understanding

there is a harddrive icon on my desktop sometimes 2 or more of them that have a file name associated with it or a size in 'mb' or 'gb'.

What is that there for ????

    thanks,
    Nate

Those are partitions you have mounted from your Places menu. Or automounted USB drives, but these will show the USB symbol on the icon if you're still using the default theme.
