Ubuntu's policy for updating binary drivers
Hi there.
I'm suffering a small bug with the Broadcom WL driver on Maverick, not a show stopper, but annoying nonetheless. It was installed by the Restricted Drivers Manager.
After having another bug in Lucid with the Radeon card for months, and noticing the driver was never updated on the RDM even after several updates from AMD, I installed the driver by hand, but it was a hassle because any kernel or xorg update can break it so it requires a careful management.
I totally understand that restricted drivers are not under Canonical or community control so I don't blame Ubuntu for having the bugs on the first place. However, if there is an updated and "improved" version of the driver I think it should be pushed through the RDM (probably after a fair testing or feedback from the community).
My question is, is there a policy on Ubuntu for updating the restricted Drivers? I'd appreciate if you can point me to the policies or discussions about the subject on Ubuntu. Thanks.
