I liked them in the left too. Although It would seem easier to accidentaly close the window when rushing up to the file menu.

I use several different distros, but in Ubuntu I keep them on the left. Just wanted to see what the big fuss was about. Right or left, doesn't bother me one bit, but having them on the left does feel a bit more convenient to me.
