Please help.
I have Dell Dimension E521 with USRobotics5417 card (BCM4218 chipset) for networking. In the past (up to Ubuntu 11.X) I was able to install proprietary USR driver with ndiswrapper, and it worked. Just spent about 3 hours trying to get it to work on 12.04, and no luck. If you do not have suggestions on how to get this to work, which network card would you recommend to replace USR. I have N-Class Linksys E3200 router. The card should preferably have external antenna.
I have a Dell D800, loaded Xubuntu 12.4, and all looked good except no wireless. I struggled several weeks. Today I happened upon this page in the forum. I downloaded the zip, followed the instructions and I am looking at the laptop with wifi working!
The wifi chipset on my D800 is BCM4309.
The forum page with my solution is:

You want to look at post #11 from Wild Man.
I hope this solves your problems, it was driving me batty too!!!
I've just reinstalled 12.04 from a CD. Have no luck getting wireless to work. I did activate the broadcom STA driver under 'additional drivers' and it's activated/in use. Here's the info:

Tried rmmod -f dell-laptop, didn't work either.
Also reset BIOS to default: didn't work.
Tried b43, didnt' work.
I don't know what else to do!
Nate33, give this a try....
This is what worked for me:
I followed MrD's suggestions and had to tweak it a little:
1) attach ethernet lead
2) in "additional drivers", turn off STA driver that was auto installed after vanilla 11.04 install
3) in synaptic package manager, remove bcmwl-kernel-source, every b43/broadcom entry, finding them by using the "search" button on those two terms and not the "quick filter"
4) restart computer
5) open terminal,"sudo apt-get install bcmwl-kernel-source"
6) restart computer and enjoy the wifi.
(at this point I did not have wifi going so then I continued on)
7) in synaptic package manager I searched (again search, not quick filter) for broadcom and installed the following: b43-fwcutter, broadcom-sta-common, broadcom-sta-source. Already installed was bcmwl-kernal-source, so I left that alone.
restart, yes again. I was still connected to ethernet but I hovered over my ethernet and opened the list of availalble networks and could see my wifi, so I disconnected the ethernet and connected to wifi.
Marty331,
Thank you for your reply.
I followed your instructions and all the wireless stuff under the network icon are gone.
I tried almost everything and checked on rfkill list, it said hard blocked=yes.
Any other suggestions, please let me know.
Thank you

I have to agree about this annoying wifi card. I freaking Linux now but each time I have a problem with Ubuntu it is always surround my wifi.
I just last night did a sizeable update of over 200 files on 12.04 and again I've lost the wifi. Unfortunately enough of a gap passes that I can't recall what I did that fixed it last time.
I may have to do my own thread but hopefully within this 61 pages (sigh) there contains the bounty of an answer to my particular problem.
When I runI get the following:Code:lspci -nn | grep 0280 lsmod | grep -e b43 -e wl
So NOTHING on the wl module at all.Code:05:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4313 802.11b/g/n Wireless LAN Controller [14e4:4727] (rev 01)
I then tried blacklisting all the 80211 and wl module in blacklist.conf and then loading the wl module and it's dependencies withwhich then gave the following errorCode:sudo modprobe lib80211 sudo modprobe lib80211_crypt_tkip sudo modprobe wl
The search it doth continue..Code:FATAL: Module not found
EDIT: Success with STEP 2 from the original post. All I did was removed the Broadcom bcmwl-kernel-source package (using the Ubuntu Software Centre and the restricted repository), rebooted then installed it again (couldn't find even broadcom in the package search so I just pasted in bcmwl-kernel-source again and I was good to go).
BOOM!! Result. Get in!!

The solution still works on Ubuntu 12.04 on an HP dv6000 laptop. Thank you!Solution: System > Administration > Synaptic Package Manager > Search: firmware-b43-lpphy-installer > Click Mark > Click install > Close
