I have an early 17" imac G5 PPC, only 512mb RAM. Been looking at the PPC linux distros available, and xubuntu 10.04 looks good, does anybody run here on an old Imac?
Will just be a backup pc
any other better distro suggestions welcomed,
cheers

MintPPC is what I use nowadays.
Thanks for the Mint ppc link, looks like a nice system - great work!
when do you expect to get an ISO file together?
(ps: I registered for an account to get the instructions, I can imagine, that some/alot of people wont want to hassle of that)
I am working on that, but that is not easy to accomplish. Don't expect it soon. If people want to help in the project, feel free to contact me.

anyone else run an old imac g5 with linux??
I run a 2004 PPC Powerbook G4 with Ubuntu 10.10. Performance is good, but I've had to make tweaks, like disabling KMS with my radeon graphics card in order to get visual effects to work.
EDIT: it had 512MB of ram, but I'm using 1GB of 3rd party ram now. However, it doesn't use nearly that much ram on a regular basis.
What year was yours?

"What year was yours?"
its late 2004, 1.8ghz model
thanks for the info - good to breath a bit of life in these machines now that apple have forgotten about them!
tried running xubuntu at the weekend with the following results:
xubuntu 10.04
live session worked fine - everthing found and running except bluetooth
however after install it failed to boot - some kind of yaboot issue
xubuntu 10.10
live session fine as above
installed fine (took ages!) booted ok except - fatal errors listed on boot, but after waiting a few seconds, desktop loaded and worked fine
kubuntu 10.10
live session all ok - very very slow so did not install
currently running xubuntu 10.10 all ok little bit slower than i had hoped but working none the less.
ps: tried to install mint ppc - however had problems booting the debian installer - booted from disk, fans running on full speed, lines and lines of text and nothing would make it stop except unplugging! Anyone will be trying again later!....
also waiting on Watt OS PPC to be released too
I know, the thread is old. But I just finished up an hour ago and after doing some googling I wound up here. Now I run Xubuntu 12.04 on a G5 iMac PPC with 2 Gigs of ram.
I'll be honest, it's not to speedy. Not terrible, about as fast as OSX 10.4 but with better software options.
The nvidia card seems to hiccup a bit with the UI display (tabs don't show text sometimes, line numbers are replaced with a vertical grey area in Geany) but I've turned off copositing to help with window movement artifacts.
I wouldn't suggest running something like Eclipse on it. I would if I knew I wasn't going to have to close it ever again to wait through that launch time again. But I'm keeping my sofware choices slim.
If I where to do it again I might give Debian a shot for performance comparison, maybe setup openbox etc ala crunchbang. Otherwise I might have started with a minimal install and add xfce bits myself.
bf and bflegacy modules don't want to help, I've tried everything but I could not for the life of me get wireless working. Hopefully a usb wireless adapter will remedy that (yet to look into it).
I'm just happy to have it up and running for now. I'm hoping to take it to the office for coding and dev work. I hate typing on my laptop keyboard.
Hi, this is an old thread so it has been closed, please do not post in threads that have not had a post in a year or more, thanks for sharing.
