I used to live in Chicago a few years ago, but in case I go back there this year or early next year, I'd love to join a local team =)

Re: Proposed --> Chicago Ubuntu Team

Hey guys, I made some updates to the ChicagoTeam Wiki. I kept everything that was there, just applied a little of the DocTeam styling to it, and added a suggestion box. so lets come up with some things and get this rolling. UbuntuMarketing needs us in Chicago and this would be great.

Greenworm, I fired you an email with some info. Thanks!!!

Thumbs down Re: Proposed --> Chicago Ubuntu Team

nixternal, Thanks for the work. I've been a bit slow on input due to a major career change (I'm leaving the Military after 9 years).

My initial goal was to spread the word and help Market Ubuntu and I think every one is on board with that as a first priority in a vision statement.

I'm still working on an Icon idea give us some identity (time is still crunched)
So Idea's for this also need to keep flowing in.

So the big question is how do we Market Ubuntu to Chicago????
I'd like to start maybe with a cool chicago.craigslist.org ad. Maybe with a Link to Ubuntu.com. Besides the Nelson Mandela Video are there any other Ubuntu ads we could link and us with it???

Are there any other word-of-mouth type marketing ideas?? The Chicago LUGs I think are a waste of time. Most of these guys are BSD, RED HAT guys that are afraid to change and Ubuntu is to different for them.

So how else can spread the word???

Re: Proposed --> Chicago Ubuntu Team

This is our #1 goal. The following can help us out with the marketing aspect and the things needed in the Ubuntu community.
    1. MarketingTeam
    2. DIYMarketing
    3. UbuntuAtConferences
    4. PastUbuntuPresentations
    5. LoCoTeamList

If I come up with any more I will post them, but that is a decent start so far. There are computer shows that come to the Chicago land are quite frequently, and that would be a great opportunity. I live out by College of Dupage, and they have a decent show every 2 months and I have noticed that Uniform is out there giving Linux conferences. What I don't appreciate is the fact they give information about opensource and the free world, yet they charge out the wazoo. It doesn't have to happen like tomorrow, but a small booth or something at the show, which is only like $50 now, where we can have signs and what not, hand out literature and cd's, and I am possibly going to build a couple of systems in the future with Ubuntu/Kubuntu, modded, and could possibly use those to raffle maybe.

Like you, I did an 8 year stint in the Navy, and got off active duty in 98, and spent 2 years in the reserves. It takes some adjusting. If possible, it would be nice to have an IRC room where can definately brainstorm, that is if you can do that. If not, my contacts are listed everywhere for other chat protocols.

Re: Proposed --> Chicago Ubuntu Team

Hey, I'm from Des Plaines, and live about 5 mins from O'Hare. Just loaded up Ubuntu 6.06 this week. I've had great success with running Quake 4 and UT2004 on it. I do alot of gaming and host a LAN party about once a month in Des Plaines (http://www.minilanclub.com). I'd like to expand my use of Ubuntu to Video Editing and Conversion, as well as web design. Is there any time that people are planning to get togeather to discuss what they do on Ubuntu and what lil tricks and tips they have to share with others... I know this could be done on the fourms but its always nice to meet people face to face.

I'm in Woodridge, I'd love to help in any way possible. I've been using Kubuntu since march when Windows didn't want to recognize my 75GB WD Raptor drive. I decided that it was time to take the plunge and I've been a huge fan ever since spreading the love wherever I can.

Cool Re: Proposed --> Chicago Ubuntu Team

Mr_HentAi give us some info on the lan party; what's the average age and number of people that show. What games are you playing. This is like the only forum that I can see a Linux group meeting being cool. (although I'm sure we'd be playing on Windows boxes

This is a BYO computer deal right?

Many people have expressed a desire to meet so you may have some takers here for an organzied sub event...

    Just a thought
