Question System Tray Icons Disappears/Rearranges Automatically

I'm helping an elderly person in here... I've installed Ubuntu 10.10 (was having similar issues in 10.04 too) on his PC and generally it's working just fine. The problem is system tray icons disappears/rearranges automatically but the biggest issue is that NetworkManager applet icon disappears and somehow internet stops working every now and then...

Is there any way to "weld" NetworkManager etc icons to the Gnome Panel/taskbar ? so that they can not be removed without entering the password?

    Many thanks in advance!

The network applet is separate from the rest of the indicators. You can right-click the three score marks next to it and click 'Lock to Panel', but I'm not sure that's what you're looking for- it doesn't seem like it would be related to connectivity failures as you describe.

    @ d5xtgr

thanks for the reply. Icons disappears/rearranges even after being 'Locked to Panel'. And the connectivity issue is equally strange as it's a wired-desktop. You restart few times and it'll re-connect but sometimes it takes a while.
