Maverick freezes during program installation

Fired up Synaptic to install some programs and updates and then during installation the machine was frozen solid. I had to shut down the power to reboot. I reinstalled Maverick from scratch but the same thing is happening now.

Did you wait after the installation for any updates to complete before trying to install programs?

It seems, sometimes, that waiting until after the first updates often resolves these types of problems.

Fixed. it is my own fault. I activated a PPA and it turned out that one of the libraries it installed was causing a lot of problems. Couldn't remove it so finally need to reinstall fortunately I didn't have anything yet and reinstallation took 15 minutes max and it was really smooth ( ) Should have waited a bit before adding PPAs.
