how to boot into recovery mode at startup

    Hey folks-

I have a problem with my (junk) project laptop at work, running 10.04LTS. Today with nothing up on it but email and rhythmbox, it hung up so severely that I had to just shut it off. Now, when I boot up it get to the log on screen and hangs. Once in awhile I can get logged in, but it will promptly re-boot and then freeze at log on again.

My question: what is the key sequence to get into the boot menu so I can try recovery mode? On my Ubuntu at home it gives me the option for a few seconds. This one has never done it. Right after the old HP screen disappears, it starts booting with no choice. I have hit most every 'logical' combo of keys to get into the boot menu, but have had no luck.

    Can someone enlighten me?

    Thanks!

Hold down the shift key whilst booting. That should bring up the Grub menu with the recovery option.

Thank you! That does it...but I appear to have some hardware problems on this old thing...it's my "radio" at work, basically so it's no real loss.
