    This worked for me:
    sudo apt-get --reinstall install ubuntu-desktop
    To get to a command line I had to interrupt the boot (hold down left-shift) and choose Recovery Mode, which gave me a root shell. (The "sudo" is optional (and harmless) in that case, of course, but would be necessary if logged in as a regular user.)
