Video lag under ubuntu 10.04 lts using proprietary ati drivers

Hello, I'm experiencing video lag in games. I'm using 10.04 lts 32 bit and the latest version of proprietary drivers. For example I play hon and so and then it freezes for a small period of time which is frustrating. I don't understand, my specs are:
t4300 intel 2,1 ghz dual core
    4 gb of ram
    ati hd4330
Under this specs it should run perfectly. What's the matter? Ati drivers have poor support under linux? I tried updating to 10.10 and nothing. I tried contacting customer supporot amd but they can't help me. Nice isn't it?

    Any suggestions?

What the heck is "hon?" Perhaps you haven't received any replies because no one knows what game you're having problems with.

The standard first thing to try is: turn off Desktop Effects completely. It's under Preferences>Appearance>Visual Effects.

If that doesn't work, I have some other ideas. However, I am having a larger difficulty with Ubuntu 10.04 at present: I keep having to reinstall the Nvidia drivers, every single time I restart 10.04.

For now, I'm using my Ubuntu 9.10 install, which I'm glad I kept.

Hon is heroes of newerth: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heroes_of_Newerth
A game, similar to dota that has a client for linux also.

Thanks GrannyTux, I'll try and see if that fixes my problem. I will come back with a reply.
Also Objekt, if you have other suggestions I will be happy to hear them. I don't have desktop effects enabled.

Well, you could try another graphically-intensive game. "Nexuiz" is in the Ubuntu repositories, so it's easy to install (and then uninstall later, if you don't care for it). You can turn the graphics up high enough to really challenge your graphics card.

See whether Nexuiz runs ok. This should give us an idea whether you're having a general problem with 3D graphics, or just with Heroes of Newerth.

GrannyTux I tried the drivers provided on that link. I removed the proprietary ones I had from the repositories. They are worse than the ones I had before. My game still lags, even with several effects disabled.

I tried also nexuiz, at normal settings. When moving around I would catch 190fps, when in actions arround 50-60 and when in serious action no less than 40 fps.
    Any other ideas?
