10.04 hangs at boot logo but works as server

    Hi,

I use my Ubuntu machine as local server and media center. It's currently busy for a few more hours over the network. Samba and ssh work just fine.

But when I turned on the monitor to watch television, it turns out that Ubuntu has hung at the boot screen ('ubuntu' with the dots).

Is there any way (through ssh) that I can make it continue booting to the desktop (my media center is set up to automatically run after automatically logging in), without rebooting the machine? Because that would stop the current file operations over samba.

    -update-

    Tried:
    sudo startx
    sudo service gdm restart
plugging in keyboard and doing ctrl+alt+F7 (where X is at)
init 5 (dots still frozen, not animating)
