How to enable VGA output on CDinstall?

I have an old laptop with a broken LCD (XP sends VGA video just fine) and since it is quite silent I would like to recycle it as a desktop computer with an external monitor.

after I boot up the CDROM, the monitor shuts down, and the hotkey (fn+F5) to turn on the external monitor does not work.

I can get to a CLI by pressing CTRL+ALT+F1-6.

Is there any boot option or terminal command that will enable VGA output on the installer CD?
