Thanks to all !!! the answer to my problem lied somewhere in between your comments so i wanted to add my path to the solution witch as i said is steps taken form different comments:
1, i downloaded the drivers from http://www.canon-europe.com/Support/...ownload&page=1 (all 4 of them)
2. extracted all of the folders (cnijfilter-source-3.40-1; MP280series_printer_driver; MP280series_scanner_driver; scangearmp-source-1.60-1)
3. extracted cnijfilter-mp280series-3.40-1-deb.tar.gz in the MP280series_printer_driver folder
4. then in the folder cnijfilter-mp280series-3.40-1-deb/packages i installed: cnijfilter-common_3.40-1_i386.deb and cnijfilter-mp280series_3.40-1_i386.deb
5. extracted scangearmp-mp280series-1.60-1-deb.tar.gz in the MP280series_scanner_driver folder
6. then in the folder scangearmp-mp280series-1.60-1-deb/packages i installed : scangearmp-common_1.60-1_i386.deb and scangearmp-mp280series_1.60-1_i386.deb
7.Printing worked fine from the start like i see for most people
Scanning didn't work i tired GIMP and XSane , but i found a post on a another forum http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=257004 the name of the user is pythagorean.
8.His advice worked: alt+ F2 then type scan and run scangearmp and scan !!!!
I don't know what is the difference between normal menu approach and alt +F2 but in the normal approach typing "scan" didn't amount to anything
Sorry if somethings aren't clear i am a new Ubuntu user ( it has been a week now) that went cold turkey from Windows, and English isn't my first language.

i was looking for a original replacement toner for my hplj1100a - amazon has them on sale for $36. they have 'compatible' toners out there for $15 but they all have 1-star negative reviews. original toner from hp is $80!!!

i found this printer in walmart for $29 (yeah, it's no laser printer but it's brand new & color for less then the price of a replacement toner).

Thanks. I had some issues that it didn't detect the printer. After turning it off and on 3 or 4 times, deleting the printer from settings, then another round of on and off, it miraculously detected the printer. Test page worked!!!
