So, I just tried again to launch scangear prior to trying this new command... and it worked.
I haven't done anything since I last tried to launch it (a couple of weeks ago, I think), but there has been an update or two, so I guess the issue has been fixed, great news!
Thanks for helping out anyway

I enclose a thumbnail of the box one edits
Yes I did it time ago but unfortunately nothing changed. I could try to clean up everything and try again. I use drivers 3.40-1. Thanks!

Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit, running on Asus 1225b.
Installed (via Ubuntu Software Center):
cnijfilter-common-64 3.90-63~precise1
cnijfilter-mp280series-64 3.90-63~precise1 (... seems to be a newer version than what is available on Canon website)
Tried:
ScanGear - says "Cannot find available scanners"
XSane 0.998 - says "no devices available"
Simple Scan - says "No scanners detected"
Gimp - says "Cannot find available scanners"
Note the printer works fine.
Help appreciated!

from a terminal, and for repeated use, you create a launcher ...........google to find how to do itscangearmp
.........if you don't have ScanGear installed ............ it comes down as scangearmp-mp280series-1.60-1-deb.tar.gz .....let me know and I can give you the commands if you need them
