    Internet connection not working using ethernet cable

    I am connected to the internet with an ethernet cable to a university network, no router involved. Yesterday the connection was working fine, usually after each boot I am prompted to enter a username and password to connect. Today my computer won't connect, it doesn't even get to the login screen. In Chromium it says 'Sending request' for a while then gives me the "Error 105 (net::ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED): The server could not be found." error.

    I've tried using other working ethernet connections (which don't work) and I can tether my phone's internet connection via USB (how I'm writing this post) and wifi (using ANetshare) so it must be something to do with my wired connection settings.

    I've also tried booting into a USB LiveCD (whatever they're called) and the wired connection still doesn't work.

    Is there a way to totally reset all network-related files?

    Is eth2 normal? I notice /etc/network/interfaces has a statement for eth0.

    I tried changing /etc/network/interfaces to:

    Code:
    # The loopback network interface
    auto lo
    iface lo inet loopback

    # The primary network interface
    auto eth2
    iface eth2 inet dhcp
    Which didn't help.

    Then I had a look at /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules:
    Code:
    # PCI device 0x10ec:0x8139 (8139too)
    SUBSYSTEM=="net", ACTION=="add", DRIVERS=="?*", ATTR{address}=="00:01:4a:cb:24:57", ATTR{dev_id}=="0x0", ATTR{type}=="1", KERNEL=="eth*", NAME="eth0"

    # PCI device 0x8086:0x4220 (ipw2200)
    SUBSYSTEM=="net", ACTION=="add", DRIVERS=="?*", ATTR{address}=="00:13:ce:a9:c9:af", ATTR{dev_id}=="0x0", ATTR{type}=="1", KERNEL=="eth*", NAME="eth1"

    # PCI device 0x1969:0x1062 (atl1c)
    SUBSYSTEM=="net", ACTION=="add", DRIVERS=="?*", ATTR{address}=="00:26:18:82:1d:09", ATTR{dev_id}=="0x0", ATTR{type}=="1", KERNEL=="eth*", NAME="eth2"

    # PCI device 0x168c:0x002b (ath9k)
    SUBSYSTEM=="net", ACTION=="add", DRIVERS=="?*", ATTR{address}=="00:25:d3:46:0d:53", ATTR{dev_id}=="0x0", ATTR{type}=="1", KERNEL=="wlan*", NAME="wlan0"
    I commented out eth0 and eth1 and changed the name of the third device to eth0. After restarting dmesg|grep eth0 shows:
    Code:
    [   19.096675] atl1c 0000:02:00.0: atl1c: eth0 NIC Link is Up<100 Mbps Full Duplex>
    [ 1413.491657] atl1c 0000:02:00.0: atl1c: eth0 NIC Link is Up<100 Mbps Full Duplex>
    Though in the network indicator under 'Wired Network (Atheros AR8132 Fast Ethernet)' it says 'device not managed'.

    For some reason I can see other computers on the network (all Macs) and other users music in Rhythmbox (I can only see the names not retrieve any of the songs).

    What I don't understand is that also I can't use the network using USB Ubuntu boot.

    Any more ideas?

    Interfaces defined in /etc/network/interfaces generally aren't managed - here is a thread that might help.

    Really sorry for wasting your time. I found out today that I was blocked from the university network, MAC address block and all. Everything is working fine now!
