    Question installing codecs

    hi friends,
    once i just had a thread about codecs and their definitions, but i couldn't find appropriate answer.so i hope you will help me,DV?
    i want to know what are codecs that a multimedia player uses them to play a music or a show?
    and i will wonder if you could help me to find and install codecs on a player?
    should i download a special codec or i should write it?

    Just click a multimedia file and a popup window will suggest installing a codec if needed. If you want to know what codecs are, look it up on Wikipedia.

    You don't say which version or derivative you are using, so I'm assuming you don't have the codecs preinstalled.

    You can get most of the codecs you need by simply installing the "restricted-extras" package for your derivative. Additional packages will be needed to decode and play DVDs.

    Install the Ubuntu restricted extras from the software center and read the description . The packages included will cover most audio and video needs.

    If you are missing a plug-in you will receive a message.
