batch image processing - need to convert size

Hello all,

I am currently working with a database of 450 images that are at a resolution of 896x592 pixels; in order for some operations to be done on the images, though, they need to have a width of exactly 640 pixels. how can I, using gimp or imagemagick (or another program, open to suggestions!) do batch processing on the entire database to scale all of these images?
