Volume Much Too Loud On Ubuntu Boot

I am running Ubuntu 10.04.1 on a triple boot late 2007 iMac. Whenever I boot Ubuntu, apparently the log in sound is at full volume (well it was till I turned it off). If I leave my external speakers' volume alone, or forget to turn them down, even at the lowest setting in Ubuntu's volume slider is pretty loud and actually just turns the audio off long before it's all the way to the left. Plus the volume control seems rather crude. Anything I can do to make Ubuntu play nice as far as volume levels to match the OSX or Windows 7 levels?

    thanks ahead of time

p.s. I also have Ubuntu 10.04.1 installed in VirtualBox and a dozen others and none blast me off my chair.
