    Cartes du Ciel

I found this really neat program and am trying to install it on Ubuntu, though am having trouble. It's a skychart program called Cartes du Ciel and it's a great program, though I always installed it 3rd party from a download, I was wondering if anyone could find it and give some simple instructions on how to install it. Your help is much appreciated with a "thanks" cuz I ain't got no money hunny... lol. Yeah, if you enjoy looking at the stars, this program is hard to compare, it's got everything... except easier install instructions... hihi.

I have never tried this program, but have you installed it on Linux before?

Looking at the installation requirements I see no mention of Linux, only Windoze http://www.stargazing.net/astropc/doc/edoc5.html. It states 'Prerequisite : Windows 95/98/NT/2000/XP' on the download site (http://www.stargazing.net/astropc/download.html, and the 'Basic package 2.76' installer is an .exe file, so I think it is safe to say this is a Windoze only program?

For Linux also. Check out http://www.ap-i.net/skychart/ and the wiki page is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cartes_du_Ciel/ to check out this program. It's a great program, though can't get it to install to an application spot in the menu. Perhaps it has to be run manually, not certain about that. Yes, I've used it in Linux even, though that was ages ago. Let me know if anybody has any luck.

Try Celestia instead. It's the same sort of program, and really easy to install.

If you are running Ubuntu or Xubuntu:
    Code:
     sudo apt-get install celestia-gnome
    If you are running Kubuntu:
    Code:
     sudo apt-get install celestia-kde
It will take a few minutes to install and it works best on a reasonably recent computer, but I've used it with Intel's embedded crap-ware video system on several computers just fine.

    Re: Cartes du Ciel

There is a 32 bit deb package available here which works in Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS, you can simply download that and install it.

This program has some additional data files associated, see: http://sourceforge.net/projects/skychart/files/

Also reading the documentation is always the best way to start. The author of this software provides a repository: http://www.ap-i.net/skychart/en/docu...n_linux_debian

I can't get your instruction site to work correctly Wistful Says it can't find 'Skychart'. It also frauded me the su command somehow, not certain exactly how, though my su password doesn't work suddenly and I'm the only person who administrates this Ordinateur. :/ (Ordinateur = French for Computer and doesn't mean '**** Eater' in Latin!)
