    Mouse Wheel Acceleration

    Hi,

I was wondering how much interest there is for mouse wheel acceleration? I am using both MacOSX and Linux a lot and when I return to Linux from MacOSX, I always notice the big difference in having mouse wheel acceleration on MacOSX.

Mouse wheel acceleration basically means: Without it, slow scrolling is slow, fast scrolling is a bit faster. With it, slow scrolling is slow but fast scrolling is much faster than before. The curve in which it accelerates is higher and at the same time, the sensitivity doesn't change. This is a big difference to just make the scrolling faster which means that also slow scrolling is much faster. In most cases, you still want to be able to just scroll a bit, maybe even only a few pixels and at the same time, you want to be able to scroll very fast. With something like mouse wheel acceleration, you have that. It also feels very natural to have it.

You probably know already the mouse pointer acceleration which is basically the same but for the mouse pointer.

I think Windows 7 also does not have it by default. I tried to find a video on Youtube which shows the difference and I think this video does show it quite good:

I think this would improve the overal desktop UI and behavior.

This idea was already posted on Ubuntu brainstorm, though it has not found that much attraction. That is why I am posting here, to get some attraction to it.

I have already worked on this and created a first patch for Xorg. If there is interest here, I can maybe created a patched xorg deb package and upload it somewhere so you can try it out. If you are trying out my patch: good values to play with: speed-multiplier: 100, max-speed: 20. Report with source code patch at Xorg:

So, what do you think about it?
