I still maintain the point that designing a monolithic kernel in 1991 is a fundamental error. Be thankful you are not my student. You would not get a high grade for such a design (Andrew Tanenbaum to Linus Torvalds)

    Re: What's in your backpack?

Del Vostro 1400 + power supply
1 USB thumb drive with Ubuntu pre-loaded
1 USB thumb drive for file transfer
    2 Uniball micropoint blue pens
1 8.5x11 pad of grid paper
the most recent issue of either Linux Journal or Ubuntu User
    phone recharger
    first aid kit*
    headlamp*
    Leatherman Juice Cs4 multitool*
    small bag of trail mix*
    water bottle*
    music player with radio*

    * these are items I also have in my car, really good stuff to have in case of emergencies (I live in an earthquake-prone area). In the car I keep at least two gallons of drinking water; at home I maintain a stock of 16 gallons (good to plan on one gallon per person per day for at least seven days)+food. Don't mean to hijack this thread, but emergency preparedness is really important and when you need it it's too late. In a backpack there's usually room for a few survival necessities.
