Cannot Scan in Xsane under Ubuntu (But I Can in Virtual Box Running Trisquel?)

I'm testing out Trisquel x86_64 (think Ubuntu sans proprietary drivers) in Virtual Box and I've managed to have my computer finally recognize and scan from my HP PSC 1610xi All-in-One unit.

However, on my host Ubuntu system, I cannot scan from this same printer and I'm presented with the option to scan from my webcam every time I start xsane.

Can anyone here help me figure out why this is occurring and how I can fix it on my host system?

Have you installed hplip? Can you print and fax from the printer?

I have installed hplip; I can't print from the printer due to a hardware issue (I have to clean it, as I bought it used).
