Will suspending my computer too much bust the hardware faster?

    I have a Dell Dimension 3000, Ubuntu 10.04.

I often suspend and wake it throughout the day, sometimes as many as 10. Will this have adverse affects on the hardware's performance/longevity?

    no idea...

it's my understanding that monitors go into hibernation by the system no longer sending a signal to it. Therefore it's up to how the monitor hardware manages it.

I remember in computer class we had a similar question: what wears down a computer faster, shutting it off each time, or keeping it on all the time?

In general, the planned obsolescence of components will break-down long before the situation has an impact.

HDD's have a limited number of 'spin-downs' in their life. If you are constantly spining-down to hibernate for a couple of hours and then waking the computer causing the hard-drive disk to spin back up, it will eventually have adverse effects. With that said, most HDDs have spin-down limits in the millions, so even if you are constantly spinning-down and then back up, it is still likely your HDD will outlive the technology in your computer and last until you are through with that computer as a whole.
