    DVD drive not reading

    Hi all.

Over the last few days, my DVD-RW drive was giving me some problems but still read and burnt DVD's. I've got another CD-RW drive that works fine -it reads/mounts and burns CD's from what I see.

Now, it doesn't recognize when there is a CD or a DVD in the tray, although the drive is up and running and detected by the system. I attach the output of "Disk Utility", where you can see that both units are seen by Ubuntu.

What can I do to get it working again?

I forgot to mention that I have read some of the other threads about this issue and that I'm using the new kernel 2.6.35-15, but still to no avail.

I don't know anything about the new kernel, but if you've been having problems with the drive I would suspect that first! Do you have another computer that you can plug this drive into? or maybe a friends pc to see if it works on them?

    Re: DVD drive not reading

I had been noticing a decrease in the burning speed. The last time I used CD/DVD creator, two or three days ago, burned the DVD at 2.3-2.4x, which it seemed rather strange because it had been burning at 10-16x.

Also, I had been noticing that when I used k9copy, the burned DVD5 resultant had problems at around 50min-1h:05min of play. I guess when the original DVD9 layers changed. I can't watch this burned DVD5 on my DVD player nor my Ubuntu but I have no problems on my XP laptop player (!).

This started happening a few weeks ago.

I thought to boot Ubuntu from the liveCD, to see whether is a problem from the updates.

Well, I can't. After a while, it goes to the hard drive boot.

But it stalls I have some other CD or DVD in the tray.

I've opened the PC and fiddled a little with the wires. The faulty drive only works if I keep the IDE cable pressed inwards and upwards to the unit.

Is it a cable fault? A connection fault? A drive fault?

I'd try using a new cable, solved a similar problem for me.

gj_clt, I'll try that, then. It's not that expensive.

However, the cable works on my other CD-RW/DVD drive.
