Pitivi - which format/codec to use

I'm not very good at video editing, and what I wanted to do is essentially to cut the last portion of a .mov digital camera file, and then compress it in some way. I am able to successfully get rid of the last portion of the file using Pitivi or Openshot.

But then I have to "render" the video, and I have to choose the format/codec. I have no idea what to choose. I want the file to be easily opened for a normal Windows or Mac user, in addition to Ubuntu users.

Would be grateful for any help. Thanks!

Just save it as a regular .avi file. Nearly everything can read that format.

AVI is just a container. You still need to have the right codec for whatever the actual video is encoded in.

Flyver, you could go for MPEG if you want something nice and ubiquitous.
