    Question No Internet in 10.04 upgrade

    Hi--

    This afternoon I upgraded from 8.04 lts to 10.04 lts using update manager. Selected standard stuff. Now I cannot connect to the internet. I do get my internal ethernet network.

    I see people posting about right clicking on the network manager icon and ticking a box for activating the network. There is no tick box on network manager for me.

    Here is what I have done so far:

    I did find that network manager did not have the mac address for this machine, so I entered that from the hwaddr above in ifconfig.

    I am guessing the computer does not see the gateway, but I do not know where to change the setting for that.

    Any ideas?

    What options are available if you right-click the NM icon?
    eth0 seems to have an IP address, and the routing table seems to be using (what I presume is) the router at 192.168.0.1. Can you ping the internet by IP address (8.8.8.8 or 74.125.95.99)? The next thing to check would be cat /etc/resolv.conf.

    Thank you for helping me.

    When I ping those two addresses the ping works, all packets received, no loss.

    When I cat resolv.conf, I get:

    nameserver 192.168.0.1
    Looks to me like those are as expected.

    When I upgraded to 10.04, I got these error messages which seem to me to be relevant here:

    “Adding client to server's list failed,CORBA error: IDL:omg.org/CORBA/COMM_FAILURE:1.0” (has to do with evolution-alarm-notify)
    Network Monitor has quit unexpectedly; if you reload a panel object, it will automatically be added back to the panel. Chose reload; repeated twice
    “The NetworkManager applet could not find some required resources. It cannot continue.”
    When I right click the nm applet I have these choices:
    Properties; Help; About; Remove from Panel; Move; Lock to Panel.

    Right clicking the NM applet I get Connections properties for eth0: General and Support tabs; and below Help, Configure, and Close.

    I have only an ethernet connection on this machine; no wireless card.

    Hi--

    Well, the problem is gone. I did nothing other than what I said I did in the prior post, so I can see no reason for the problem to resolve itself.

    Hope it's not one of those comes and goes things, but for now, it's working.

    The machine I was working on continues to work OK.

    However, I have upgraded another (and still have two more to go), and this one has no internet either.

    I have run these commands, with these results:

    you could try wicd instead network mgr. network mgr was always problematic at least for me i had always problems with internet and never had nay problems with wicd

    Seems a bit contradictory...
    You might be able to add NM icon by adding a "Notification Area" to the top panel.

    Thanks to both of you for jumping in so quickly!

    I got it to work. It was a pain to install wicd without an Internet connection, but I managed it. Then I fired up wicd, disconnected the connection it showed, reconnected it, and everything seems to be working!

    So my remaining question is what did I do to disconnect and reconnect? Is there a cli version? Is this ifdown and ifup?

    For history buffs, and just in case I need to retrace my steps on the next machine, here is what I was going to post, before I found that wicd worked for me:

    I have rebooted a couple of times since then, and still no Internet.

    Iowan--

    What I did to set the hwaddr was to go to System > Preferences > Network Connections in Gnome.

    I tried adding notification area to the panel, but it puts no icon there, whether I double click it, click add, or drag it there. I was able to add something, which does not look like on my other computer, by going to System > Preferences and right clicking on Network Connections.

    Trinity33--

    I would try wicd--except I cannot connect to the internet to get it.

    What eventually worked was to use synaptic on this machine, and after hitting "Apply" tick the box "download only." Then I found the files, copied them all to a place on the network accessible to the new machine, and used dpkg -i from there. (I left out one file and so had some dependency errors till I found it.)
