Usplash doesn't work very well in on my thinkpad sl500, it flickers a lot has green lines, causes weird shutdowns. But Plymouth worked when I had ubuntu 10.04. I went back to 9.10 cause of sound issues. So can I install Plymouth instead of Usplash in Ubuntu 10.04 karmic koala

You definitely can. Is it not in the repositories? Open Synaptic Package Manager (System > Administration) and search it. Uninstall usplash and install plymouth. If its not there you might have to download it manually and install it. I don't have a link off hand but I do know that you can use plymouth.
