Anyone tried this and done some research on which SD card type is the best for this with regard to speed and duration?

I would recommend a CF card in a SATA converter or a flash drive connected to a internal USB port. If you want to go ahead with the SD idea, just use any card you have lying around until you can confirm it actually works.
