    Replacement For Win98

    Hi everyone,
    FIRST THREAD!

    Anyway,
I am going to be given an old "piece of junk" and would like to turn it into a speedy little "toy" to use for things, along with my os x and xp.
The computer has windows 98 installed and only has 32MB RAM (could be 64, not sure until im given it) and a 1gig HDD. It also has a CD drive and a Floppy.

I would like to speed it to the max, to make it perform (in comparison) as nearly as good as my mac. eg. when apps are opened, they only take a few seconds to pop up. I am looking at Linux distros but am struggling to find one suitable.

I was thinking of Puppy but DSL would probably be more suitable.
I would like some recommendations to whether I should give windows a fresh install and try to delete whatever is unnecessary, or just clear it and download a linux and use WINE.

Sorry about such a long post and sorry if this isn't where it should go.
Any posts would be greatly appreciated.

Considering the specs., either Puppy or DSL would probably be good.
    SliTaz is another option: http://www.slitaz.org/en/

    Re: Replacement For Win98

Puppy needs minimum 64B, and its not going to be much fun on a 64MB machine-

    DSL should work-

Even with very light distros, old hardware like that wont be anywhere near as fast as OSX or XP on a decent machine. I might run better than XP on a 128MB/P2 computer, but if you have XP on a more reasonable machine (p3+, 256MB+) the poor old win98 machine will be outclassed IMO.

    DSL *might*.

I wonder if you could get a RAM upgrade for it.

I think I'll give puppy a go first.

Has anyone had experience with SliTaz? is it good?

DeLi Linux will work as well, it installed fine on my 486 laptop with 8mb of RAM. I couldn't boot it though, as I don't think it liked installing from the hard drive.

Puppy won't work. It's sluggish on 128mb, let alone 32mb...
    There's no place like ~/

    You didn't mention processor power.

I think oyu can forget about wine. I can tell you that Win95 will run very nice on such a maschine (especially if it has 64 MB and is a 486 processor). I sitll have it with the old Thunderbird and old Firefox and old office (97) with 850 MB hard disk.

    Re: Replacement For Win98

Maybe the 4.x version of Puppy will work better. Or other derivatives, such as Puppy Turbo Extreme and Puppy PULP.

There's also Slax, but it looks like even that might require too much RAM:

    Memory
    ------
    36 MB to boot slax.
96 MB to run Xwindow with fluxbox
144 MB to run Xwindow with KDE
328 MB to be able to use copy2ram cheatcode

But again, elsewhere on the interwebs there are still older versions that might work better, e.g. the 5.1.8 Kill Bill version.

    Might be worth a try.

Something else to check out is DSL-N (http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/dsl-n/).
