Yes, this way will work. I will get some more permanent sreenshots in a minute.

You'll need to add the ppa for Ubuntu Tweak. You didn't mention your Ubuntu version. Here are the instructions for Lucid as mentioned in your details column.

Thanks for the link. I will try this out.
One thing I'm looking for is how to change the position of the window controls, i.e. minimize, maximize and close buttons.
I did this before and I don't remember where I changed it. I've tried System->Preferences->Appearance;
but I can't find anything there about controlling which side of the window they appear on, as in left or right.
I don't have Ubuntu Tweak, yet so i know it wasn't there that I was able to make those changes. Can you help?
I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on a AMD 64 bit machine.
Thank you for your help

Yes, you can try what is above, or you can use UbuntuTweak. I had to do a Google for it the other day when the laptop was on the internet because I did not see it either and just got done with a new reinstall. Just install it that way if you want. Also, it can do lots of things, so it is not just for moving the buttons. Like Power Options, Window Features, and a more reliable old kernel cleanup.
Sorry for taking so long to respond. The internet has been horribly flaky here.

Thanks a lot for the nice guide!
Great step by step tutorial A++ mate.
The only thing I would add/change would be showing the members a step by step screen shoot for all of the new users to the Linux/Ubuntu world.
Thank you for this <3

Oh, and I am making one. I think I will use a VMware in Windows of 10.04 or 10.10 since all this stuff is on my current install. I would have to post it if I can on my blog, or on YouTube, which most people do not trust. I do not trust it either, but we will see. I have memorized this stuff. LOL
Also, I will take note of the issues with UbuntuTweak in the Ubuntu Software Center issue and fix that ASAP.
Great to see I could help! If you can make screenshots of your new desktop, that would be great!
