Laptop INCOMPATIBILITY List.

4) Issue: LiveCD fails to start

hit F6 to alter the boot options and added
nouveau.modeset=0
to the end of the boot options line and then hit enter.

This forces the use of the build-in Intel GPU instead of the 2nd NVIDIA 555M (Optimus) GPU. (Many thx to previous poster!)

Same laptop running ubuntu 11.04 same issues for me too.
Fixed sound by updating the kernel, moving to kernel 3.1 rc 4 fixed webcam
Video drivers still an issue, even in normal desktop use. Using http://ppa.launchpad.net/xorg-edgers/ppa/ubuntu made the it more usable and videos are working better still not much on 3d though

Needed to delete the 2 HP partitions to make space for an Ubuntu/Windows dual boot.
Installed Ubuntu 11.04 64bit; Linux 2.6.38-11-generic

As of yet, it seems to work well - did get rid of 'unity' from the start.

Minor Issues discovered:
Touchpad on/off switch [left/upper corner of pad] does not work (a software switch can be implemented if I cared for it)
Fingerprint reader (I lived without it in the past, so don't care)

Use boot repair to turn acpi = off then must push enter keyover
and over to boot into Ubuntu.
Doesn't shut down all the way with shutdown command
Random reboots.

All hardware except for what's mentioned works geat

Locks up when wifi connects unless ethernet is also plugged in. Locks up at boot if ethernet isn't plugged in. Trying to install the video drivers through the driver installer fails. The official driver installer downloaded from the AMD website wrecks your OS. These are problems common to every distro of Linux I've tried. Avoid this POS at all costs.

Must use acpi=off to boot, haven't found any other options.
This is the biggest issue with this computer. The others can be fixed, and are done automatically (now).
I would like to solve the acpi=off issue.


in my update from 11.04 to 11.10 I had to re-run the b43 firmware installer, by removing it and installing it again.

11.10 detected my video card automatically and downloaded the nvidia driver, unlike previous versions.

otherwise the computer runs much better, and quicker than it did with winXP last year

I have an HP tc 4200 and have been having issues with screen brightness under 11.10. All goes dim after sometimes as little as a few seconds. I can sometimes (but not always) bring the level back up in 'Screen' (where I find it suddenly at the lowest possible setting), but bringing up the output level is a hit-or-miss proposition. I note that I am not alone in this issue. I'm new to Linux (having used Macs since the dawn of time... don't laugh) so I'm afraid I'm not much help yet. I'll learn....
