Vendor: Alienware (Dell)
Model: AW17R3-7092SLV 17.3" FHD Laptop (6th Generation Intel Core i7, 16 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD + 1 TB HDD) NVIDIA GeForce GTX980M
Received: May 12, 2016
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 (Home)
Desired Operating System: Ubuntu Studio 16.04 'Xenial Xerus'
I received an Alienware AW17R3-7092SLV 17.3" FHD Laptop (6th Generation Intel Core i7, 16 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD + 1 TB HDD) NVIDIA GeForce GTX980M free of charge (don't ask!) three days ago. It has Microsoft Windows 10 (Home) installed.
I would like to completely replace Windows with Ubuntu Studio 16.04.
However, when I run the 64-bit Live CD [DVD] disk (which is perfect, not corrupted in any way), everything seems to work - except the Wi-Fi.
I am even able, using an Ethernet cable, to access the Internet and install the proprietary NVidia drivers which are on this machine.
But I cannot, no matter what I do, get that computer to connect via Wi-Fi. (The Fn + F2 control doesn't work, except sometimes to show that the Wi-Fi is disabled via a hardware switch.) Even though I configure the Wi-Fi connection properly in the Network setting, it does not function.
When I first boot up the Live CD disk, I see a message that states:
[ 4.509440] nouveau 0000:01:00.0: gr: failed to load fecs_inst (See Image DSCF0104 below.)
I do not know if this has anything to do with the problem.
Then the Live CD loads, I can go to the Settings Manager -> Software & Updates -> Additional Drivers and see:
NVIDIA Corporation: GM204M [GeForce GTX 980M]
I can install that. This replaces the X.Org X server - Nouveau display driver from xserver-xorg-video-nouveau (open source); I suppose this is the cause of that initial error message.
There is a second notice there:
Unknown: Unknown Using Processor microcode firmware for Intel CPUs from Intel microcode (proprietary). (This replaces the selection Do not use the device)
I am able to install that Processor microcode firmware too. --Please remember that this is all being done from the Live CD. (Please see Image DSCF0105 below.)
I should also mention that I tried using the new Xubuntu 16.04 64-bit Live CD (also a DVD) with exactly the same results.
I suppose the logical thing to do would be to contact Alienware/Dell but, as many people have pointed out, this is generally fruitless.
Obviously, if the Live CD doesn't work properly, I do not want to install Ubuntu Studio to this computer - UNLESS there is someone here who can help me do so. I would wish to know exactly what the Wi-Fi connection problem is and how it can be rectified.
I thank anyone who can give me an answer to this problem.

Bluetooth audio does not work. It finds the speaker. It pairs with the speaker. But the speaker does not show up in sound settings.

So I use Windows more and more.

I purchased this model with Windows. I installed Ubuntu Trusty two years ago as dual boot. So Dell does not supply me with Ubuntu support. But I did buy this machine as it was Ubuntu certified.
Interestingly, Bluetooth worked fine up until March ... then it quit working after an update. I can roll back the update by installing an old image from Mar 2016 and bluetooth works fine. But then after updating Ubuntu it no longer works. The problem is a well documented bug that has not been fixed ...

I've spent quite a few hours tracking down all the internet discussion on this ... I just don't have more time or energy for this problem any more.
thanks

Random freezing (possibly Bay Trail related) bug report on Launchpad #1575467.
WiFi connection fails. The wifi card is 10ec:b723 Realtek RTL8723BE which has a bug report on Launchpad #1454843.
There is much help there and on askubuntu. With a few tweaks it does now appear to be working... fingers crossed.
Edit: I've since installed Ubuntu 14.04 on this laptop and it is working fine with the aforementioned WiFi tweak. Actually a very nice laptop for £130.

Ubuntu 16.04 LTS
Macbook (from 2006)
Two finger right-click doesn't work.
Alternative is fn+shift+f10, but that won't work on desktop bar (launcher). You will only see a menu pop up for a split second sometimes, and you can't interact. If you want to unlock something from launcher, just throw it in bin.
