I never knew what a beautiful instrument it was. I feel I've been depriving myself.

I've only seen people making a mockery of it so I just assumed it was an awful instrument.
I don't know how / why it became an object of derision, apparently it was extremely popular at one point.

The recorder is another instrument that is looked down upon that actually sounds quite beautiful, IMO.

I think I got this impression because the only people I heard playing it were the kids who were too special -- or whose parents were too cheap -- to play the violin in school. Including me. We were all so completely terrible.
