    No, this is the heading of a section of the guide you have followed . It basically involves updating the MPlayer source files and recompiling as follows with this single command:

    Code:
    cd $HOME/mplayer_build/mplayer && \
    svn up && \
    ./configure --confdir=/etc/mplayer --disable-mencoder --disable-x264 \
                --codecsdir=/usr/local/lib/codecs && \
    make && \
    sudo checkinstall -D --install=yes --fstrans=no --pakdir "$HOME/mplayer_build" \
       --pkgname mplayer --backup=no --deldoc=yes --deldesc=yes --delspec=yes --default \
       --pkgversion "2:1.0~svn$(LC_ALL=C svn info 2> /dev/null | \
         grep Revision | cut -d' ' -f2)" && \
    make distclean

    Good news . Probably worthwhile to update every week or so and as a safeguard keeping hold of one or two of the old .deb files in case compilation is broken. But this is up to you, I suspect many grab a single copy and leave it at that but it is more fun keeping up with development!

    How do you know where a line ends to hit return, and then when to enter the next line/string/command?
    Sincerely,

    The good news is that that entire code block is a single command, which means that you can copy the whole thing, paste it into a terminal window and press return once. There are a few shortcomings to doing it this way but I have done this deliberately to make life a little easier for those who are perhaps not used to navigating the terminal, compiling source code and the like. Hopefully I have succeeded in this aim?

    Not for everybody I guess but it guarantees a good result every time, very different to Acidrip and friends though...

    An alternative to this guide has appeared which may very well mean that building the svn from source in the manner I have described is less and less relevant to the Ubuntu way of doing things. I speak of a new PPA:

    Packages in “MPlayer Daily Builds”
    https://launchpad.net/~motumedia/+archive/mplayer-daily

    Very interesting times .

    Your compilation guide is still relevant in every sense. PPAs however convenient may not be for all. This ppa is daily build and that means a new mplayer every now and then, in my case, I update monthly, also notice it has a x264, I compile my own using FO's guide so your guide is still every bit needed.

    a new PPA:
    It seems to be a fairly well enabled build, not everything, but probably what many would need.

    --enable-largefiles \
    --language=all \
    Don't know why the --enable-menu or the xvmc
    The internal libdvdcss is disabled and uses runtime cpu.

    How often it updates to early to say - if it becomes an auto-build then I'd expect quite often
