Question sound stopped upgrade to 10.04

    Hi--

Upgraded last night from 8.04 to 10.04 on gazv4.

My sound stopped working. I see nothing wrong in alsamixer, although I am not sure what I'm looking at there.

I enabled lucid proposed, also re-checked planet76 which had been disabled on upgrade. Then I installed the system76 driver and get a message that "All drivers are provided by Ubuntu." Rebooted.

There is no speaker icon in the panel as there was in 8.04.

I have checked to make sure it is not muted (Fn F6). Have also increased the volume to about 80% (Fn F8).

I have no sound whatsoever. Nothing on arriving at the login screen, nothing on logging in.

How do I get sound back?

    Thanks!
    :- Doug.

It should be there. I believe that you can get it by installing "indicator-sound".

    ranch hand--

    Many thanks!

Via synaptic, I reinstalled indicator-sound, and nothing. Still nothing after uninstalling and reinstalling. And nothing after logging out and back in.

Not sure what else to try. Any ideas?

    Thanks!

Re: sound stopped upgrade to 10.04

Are you using the sound chip on your motherboard or a separate sound card? I use an Audigy sound card and have disabled the sound chip on my motherboard. When I upgraded to 10.04 from 9.04 the install defaulted to the motherboard sound chip rather than the Audigy and hence no sound. When set back to the Audigy, all is well. If you don't have multiple sound devices than I guess this suggest won't help.

    j0eb0b--

    Thank you for helping me.

Just the plain vanilla 'puter here--no special sound cards or anything installed.

Is there a way to get to the sound applet running without clicking an icon?

I just went to the terminal and did a sudo updatedb and then locate indicator-sound. Then ran /usr/lib/indicator-sound/indicator-sound-service. Got a bunch of DEBUG responses that ended with "I just closed communication with Pulse". Same thing running the command with sudo. Here's the output:

    Code:

You can get the same functionality as the sound icon by going to System > Preferences > Sound. You can check which device is set for output and what profile you have.

Go ahead and open that, then take a screenshot by pressing Alt+PrtSc. Post the screenshot here so i can check the settings.

Try deleting the .pulse folder in your home. To access it, press Ctrl+H or select View → Show Hidden Files in the nautilus window. Alternatively, open a terminal and give
    Code:
    rm -rf ~/.pulse
logout and login again. Then, try to setup your sound in System → Preferences → Sound as isantop suggested.

    kostkon--

OK, I did as you suggested and there is no joy. Still no sound, nor sound icon in the panel.

    Next thing to try? <grin>

Re: sound stopped upgrade to 10.04

This really is a bugger. Did you check ALL the options in the Sys>Pref>Sound gui? You really should be able to get sound from there.

    If that doesn't do it how about sending the out put from;
    Code:
    lspci
That is a lower case L in that command.
