formatting an external hdd as HFS+

I have a 500GB external hard drive with several partitions on it. One of those partitions is a FAT32 partition that I would like to use for Time Machine backup. Mac OS X's Disk Utility halts, unable to modify the partition map (if I remember correctly). Does anyone know how to use an Ubuntu 10.04 live cd to format the partition as HFS+ (journaled)? Thanks so much for the help.

I've used a Mac for about 4 years now but it's been some time ago since I've used it properly.... I think you can use a Mac HDD restore program to format partitions on your harddrive. I think a program like FileSalvage should do the job.
