    Grub rescue?

i am brand new to ubuntu, and know next to nothing about computers. so when i had an old laptop die, i decided to try and put a new OS on it. and thus i downloaded ubuntu 10.04, put it on a 8gb drive, and downloaded it unto my laptop. when i try to boot, it tells me "error: d=hd0,1 cannot get C/H/S values.
    grub rescue>"
i have no idea what is happening or why (besides it can't find something?) does anyone have any helpful ideas?

It's normal to screw up your first installations of Linux, that's where the learning begins. I remember myself reinstalling Ubuntu countless times because of some single tiny mistake. From now on Google search and Linux communities should be your best friends in terms of Linux computing.
