    Server or Desktop?

    Hey everyone,

I have a computer that I want to use for general everyday work such as typing out a document, researching something online, playing some games like Nexiuz etc. The system will be running 24/7/365

I also want to use this system to host a website, and a couple gaming servers.

I am not sure which version of Ubuntu to use.
Should i install Ubuntu Desktop LTS and install Apache, MySQL and Samba after. OR should I use Ubuntu Server and install X + Gnome + Firefox?

Alternatively i'll just jump back to Arch (used it a couple years back) since that does not have server or Desktop, just customize as needed.

    Thanks for suggestions,

    Cheers - CC7

    System Specs

    8GB DDR3
    4 * 500 GB hdd
    ATI Radeon HD 5670
**(is there a driver for this card in the repo's?)

Either way works, in the end you'll get the same thing. Installing the desktop version and then Apache and friends might be a little less work, though.

    ok thanks for that.

I was not sure if the kernel for Server was different from the Desktop version. If they are the same, or if the difference is so specific that i won't notice it, i'll go with desktop version.

You want to runa webserver on top on several game servers on top of a gaming and general use machine!?

I hope you have a damn good CPU and LOTS of RAM.

If you REALLY want to do this: desktop edition

They are different but I think you won't notice it. And anyway, you can install the server kernl on a desktop system, and vice versa.

8GB DDR3 is enough I think, I can go to 16 GB if needed.
CPU is AMD athlon ii x4 (should be fine)

I used to run apache + mysql + samba server and gnome on an old pentium3
